INSTITUTIONAL STRUCTURES AND ELITES IN SILVANIA REGION IN THE 14TH–17TH CENTURIES

Research methodology

The Wessélenyi family archive is processed on two distinct dimensions: on the one hand, editing the medieval and premodern documents dated before 1690 and on the other hand elaborating a general overview of the archive, elaborating family genealogical tables and mapping its possessions and assets.

1. Most documents shall be processed under the form of synopsis elaborated in Hungarian, since Latin has become limited amongst professional historians to a small circle. According to the scientific standards, the basic unit of the regesta recording is the text of one single document i.e. the documents transcribed in another document are separated from the main document and are reconstructed as independent documents. The operation is mentioned at its place in the synopsis of the document that is the frame of the transumptum, as well as at the end. Besides the fact or the legal event that determines its issuance, the regesta also contain all the information that might be useful to the historical research (names, place or geographical names, the persons titles or ranks, the remarks of the chancellery etc.), quoting the original Latin or Hungarian text if needed. The resolutions shall entirely be included in the regesta. All dating elements occurring in the document text (e.g. religious holidays) are reconfigured in the current chronological form but, between brackets, the chronological elements of the original dating are recorded. The critical apparatus of the synopsis includes the description of the document (the material, its current condition), the seal (shape and the way in which it had been affixed, number, wax color, the condition it is kept in) as well as the archive references (its current place of conservation and the archive number). If the text submitted to synopsis or the synopsis itself have already appeared in an earlier edition, its bibliographical data shall be mentioned at the end of the critical apparatus. These diplomas and letters of an outmost historical importance shall be edited as an integral text. The rules of the collection Documenta Romaniae HistoricaCTransilvania (vol. XII. București, 1985. p. 9–10) shall be observed while transcribing Latin texts; while transcribing Hungarian texts we shall observe the norms and standards created by the Hungarian historian Benda Kalman (Magyar Orszaggyûlési Emlékek sorozat 1607–1790 közti részének szerkesztési és forrásközlési szabályzata. In: Századok108/1974. nr. 2. 436–475).

2. The general archive overview (archive general survey) describes each fascicule based on the following principles:

a.) it shall enumerate the possessions and assets as well as the families the fascicule refers to.

b.) if the documents in one fascicule refer to the same estate, for example, we shall specify only the subject and the chronological limits of the deeds.

c.) we shall summarize the document content in one sentence, containing important data from the point of view of family history or political history.

d.) we shall create the comprehensive list of letters, which shall include the sender s and the addressee s name, the year it was issued as well as the archive number.
